Most of what we get called out for is surface trouble: spalled patches where chlorine splash has eaten in, hairline cracking around the steps, a chalky grit that comes off on wet feet, pea gravel showing through in the walking lanes by the gate. What the job involves
Every concrete pool deck we build starts with where the water goes, not with the concrete. The surface has to fall away from the pool so rinse water, leaves and dirt end up in the yard instead of your skimmer basket, and a deck tipped the wrong way is the most common thing we find when somebody poured in a hurry.
After that it's demolition if the old one is finished, then forms, a graded bed of crushed rock, steel, and four inches of concrete set tight to the coping with joints laid out on purpose so the cracks show up where we put them instead of across the middle. If the only route to the backyard is a narrow gate between the house and the fence, every yard of mud gets moved by hand, and hand work eats hours that a chute off the truck does not. Condition is the next lever. Breaking out an old deck, hauling the rubble, and working carefully around coping, skimmer lids and equipment lines all add time. So does the surface you pick: a broom finish is the least of it, while salt finish, stamping and exposed aggregate each add labor and materials.

When concrete pool deck is the wrong fix
Sometimes a new concrete pool deck is the wrong answer, and you should hear that from me before we start pricing anything. If one corner has dropped, the coping is lifting and a crack runs the full width of the slab, something below it moved. Usually that's water, often a weeping return line. Pour a fresh surface over ground that's still shifting and the same crack shows up in the same place within a season.
That's a leak fix first, then concrete removal and a new slab, and the price is driven by how much comes out and whether a truck can reach the yard.
If the deck is sound and you've got two or three cracks under a quarter inch, you don't need the whole surface redone. That's swimming pool deck repair, spot work, and it's cheaper by a long way.
The steps down from the house are a separate job too. A tread that rocks or a broken nosing gets rebuilt as concrete stairs, because no topping holds together over movement like that.

Will a new pool deck crack my pool shell or pop the coping?
No. We saw and lift the old slab back away from the shell by hand instead of running a machine up against it, then pour four inches of new concrete over a prepared base with a flexible isolation joint against the coping. That joint is sealed, never packed solid with mortar. A deck poured tight to coping has nowhere to move when the ground swells, and that is what lifts tile off the beam a year or two later.
Does a stamped concrete pool deck get too hot for bare feet?
Every hard surface does on a 104 degree afternoon in late June, but color matters more than the pattern. Sand, buff and light tan release colors run cooler underfoot than charcoal or dark slate, sometimes by a noticeable margin at midday. Texture helps too, since a stamp with real relief puts less surface against your skin than a slick trowel finish.
What changes the price on a job like this?
Square footage first, then whether the old deck has to come out and get hauled off, how close a truck can get to the pour, and the finish. A broom finish costs less to place than stamping, coloring and sealing. Steps, drains and curved edges add hand work.
