A concrete driveway here takes a beating nobody plans for: 105 in the afternoon, tule fog sitting on it in December, and the same truck parked in the same two feet of it for years. A crack that's still tight gets routed out to a clean channel and filled with a flexible sealant so water stops running under the slab. A panel that's cracked three ways, rocking underfoot, or sitting low against its neighbor comes out instead, saw-cut at the joints so we're not chewing up sound concrete beside it. Spalled edges at the garage door and broken step nosings get formed and poured fresh.
What we won't do is trowel patch mix over a crack with a crumbling edge under it. That lets go inside a season and takes a chunk of the slab with it.

Stamped Concrete Driveway
A stamped concrete driveway gets you the look of slate, cobble or plank out of the same pour we'd do for any concrete driveway installation, and the whole thing lives or dies on timing. Stamp too early and the mats sink and the pattern smears sideways. Stamp too late and you're beating on a slab that only takes a shallow print, which wears off the high spots in a few summers of sun and tires.
In our heat that window can shut in twenty minutes, so I put enough hands on it to keep mats moving the second the surface is ready.
Pattern detail and how many colors you want move concrete driveway replacement cost more than anything besides square footage. Stamped work also wants sealer back on it every two or three years, or the color flattens and the grout lines go gray.
Concrete Driveway Resurfacing
Concrete driveway resurfacing is the right call when the slab underneath is still solid but the top has gone rough, stained, or crazed with hairline cracks. We grind the surface open, rout and fill the cracks that are actually moving, brush on a bond coat, then lay a polymer-modified overlay about a quarter inch thick.
Leave it broom finished, or texture and color it, which is how plenty of people end up with the look of a stamped concrete driveway without taking on a full concrete driveway replacement cost.
Where it goes wrong is overlay laid over a slab that's settling or cracked all the way through. That crack comes right back up through the new surface, and skipping the bond coat gets you sheets peeling off like sunburn.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Driveway
An exposed aggregate concrete driveway is the same pour as any other, right up until the surface comes off. We place the slab, then either wash the top skin of paste away before it hardens or spray a retarder and rinse it the next morning, which brings the stone up proud. Pea gravel reads tight and speckled. River rock looks chunkier and hides tire marks better.
Timing is the whole job. On a hot dry afternoon here that window can close in well under an hour, and a crew pulled onto something else ends up with one end of the concrete driveway showing clean stone and the other still buttered over. Blotchy exposure is permanent.
Aggregate choice, square footage and how close the truck can back in all change what the work costs. Most concrete driveway companies never mention sealing it, and sealed stone stays put.
Colored Concrete Driveways
Colored concrete driveways come two ways: integral color, mixed into the load before the truck leaves the batch plant, and a color hardener broadcast across the fresh slab and floated in. Integral runs through the full depth, so a chipped corner still looks like the rest of the driveway. Hardener gives deeper color and a tougher wearing surface.
Where color goes wrong is water. A few extra gallons added on a hot afternoon to make the mix easier to place, and that load cures a shade lighter than the one before it, and you own a stripe across your concrete driveway that no sealer will hide. So we order by the ticket, place quickly, and keep the cure even.
Color choice, one shade or two, and whether you want a border of exposed aggregate concrete driveway banding at the apron all shift the number. Sealer keeps it, refreshed every two or three years.

What it costs to pour a concrete driveway comes down to a few things I can size up standing in front of it: square footage, how the truck gets to it, how thick we pour and what steel goes in, whether there's an old slab to break out and haul off, and the finish you want on top.
Access is the sleeper. If the chute reaches, it's a quick morning. If we're wheeling concrete past a side gate to a detached garage behind an older house, that's hours of labor before anybody picks up a trowel.
Where the slab is still flat and mostly sound, concrete driveway repair on two or three panels costs a good deal less than replacing the whole run.

When concrete driveway is the wrong fix
A new concrete driveway is the wrong fix more often than people expect. If the slab still sits flat, the edges are sound, and all you have is hairline cracking and one chipped corner, tearing it out is money spent on nothing. What you want is cracked driveway repair. Good concrete repair on a sound slab holds for years and takes a day or two, not most of two weeks.
If water sheets off a bank and across the drive every time we get a real February soaking, a fresh concrete slab just gives that water something newer to undercut. Fix the grade, or hold the dirt back with a concrete retaining wall, and then we pour.
